Dr. Norbert T. “Doc” Patterson

Dr. Norbert T. “Doc” Patterson, 81, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, with his loving sister and twin brother at his side at the JourneyCare Hospice Center, Woodstock.

He was born July 1, 1933, to James and Sarah Ann (Cully) Patterson in Chicago.

On Sept. 8, 1956, he married Lucille Chick in Chicago.  

The couple moved to Harvard in 1958 where he started his optometric career. He was a highly respected optometrist in Harvard for 55 years.

He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and the Illinois College of Optometry. He was a member of the Illinois Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He served his country in the Army National Guard of Illinois from 1957 to 1963. He was honorably discharged.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Harvard for 56 years, where he served on the church council and sang in the senior choir. He was a past president of the Harvard Rotary Club. Raising funds for student scholarships was important to him, and he was proud of his 54-plus years of perfect Rotary attendance.

He was one of the original founders of the Harvard swimming pool, serving as president of the board. He was a past chairman of Harvard Milk Days, serving as the Milk Day Queen chairman for more than 25 years. He also was one of the founders of the Harvard Snow Gophers Snowmobile Club. He was a member of the Harvard Moose Lodge. He loved boating, swimming,

snowmobiling and entertaining family and friends. He had a heart of gold and will be missed.

Survivors include a sister, Dolores Pagles Hobbs, Harvard; a twin brother, Dr. Norman S. Patterson, Tinley Park; a sister-in-law, Charlene Patterson, Las Vegas; a brother-in-law, Jack Cotter, Scottsdale, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews, Pamela (Kelly) Camp, David Camp, Brian (Jennifer) Camp, James (Linda) Pagles, Jonathan (Lillie) and Joshua Pagles, all of Harvard, Cindy (Tim) Douglas, Jeffrey Patterson, Steven (Tina) Patterson, all of Frankfort, Donna Mirabelli, Scott Patterson, Todd (Stephanie) Patterson, Jay (Whitney) Patterson, all of Nevada, Lynn (Jeff) Schabel, all of Montana, James (Anne) Patterson of Idaho, Susan (Lou) Cotter-Lipschultz of California, Jeannie (Jim) Cotter-Sencion of Chicago and Joseph (Belinda) Cotter of Kentucky; and many cousins in Northern Ireland.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Melville; two brothers-in-law, Orville Pagles and James Hobbs; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Patterson and Dolores Cotter; and a great-nephew, Tyler Pagles.

Visitation was Oct. 7 at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home. The service was Oct. 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Harvard, with the Rev. Carol Gates officiating.

Interment was at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Harvard.
